Types of Giving

As a not-for-profit, community hospital, MedStar Union Memorial's dedication to patient care, research, and education & training for over 150 years has resulted in tremendous programmatic growth and improved outcomes for our patients, their families, and the community as a whole. Throughout our history, philanthropy has played a vital role in supporting MedStar Union Memorial and drives our vision to be the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health. Philanthropy will continue to play an even greater role in the life of MedStar Union Memorial, ensuring that we have the resources necessary to take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

ways-of-givingContributions in support of MedStar Union Memorial may be made in many ways including personal contributions of cash and appreciated stock, a gift in honor or memory of a loved one, a planned gift that supports the future efforts of the hospital, as well as a matching gift from an employer. Corporate and foundation contributions are also welcome.

Many donors choose to make annual gifts to specific areas of the hospital. These contributions often have deep, personal significance and are a strong testament to the work of the physicians, nurses and staff at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. They assist us in making significant investments in the medical care we provide to our patients and may be designated to patient care, research and educational services, including:

  • Area of Greatest Need - Unrestricted giving that provides flexibility for the hospital's leadership to take advantage of emerging technological and programmatic advances.
  • Curtis National Hand Center - Established by Dr. Raymond M. Curtis in 1975, the Center has a rich history of dedicated physicians treating and preventing injuries of the hand, wrist, arm, elbow and shoulder.
  • The Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Heart Institute - Recognized regionally and nationally for its accomplished team of specialists, outstanding success rates in complex and specialized procedures, and commitment to compassionate, high-quality care for the heart.
  • Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine - Nationally recognized for excellence in orthopaedics and sports medicine, MedStar Union Memorial is home to one of the world's largest hand centers, a comprehensive sports medicine program, and specialists who are fellowship-trained in the care of the hand, foot and ankle, joint replacement, spine and sports medicine.

Tribute Gifts

A tribute gift is a thoughtful means of expression that enriches the lives of others. These gifts provide the opportunity to honor a friend or caregiver, or to celebrate the life of a loved one who has passed away. A tribute gift gives twice; it honors the recipient and it supports the lifesaving work at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.
