Recognizing Your Support

MedStar Union Memorial Hospital values and recognizes support from all of our donors.  Philanthropic investments help us to enhance patient care, spur innovation, teach new generations of physicians, conduct leading-edge research, and invest in our talented nurses and leaders. They also sustain programs for which we are not reimbursed, and our significant commitment to charity care.

The Founders Society

Generous gifts have always played an important role at MedStar Union Memorial.  The women who founded this hospital in 1854 were visionary leaders.  Not long after their first meeting, funds had been raised to launch the hospital.  Their can-do spirit remains imperishable, and is embodied today not only by our physicians, nurses and associates, but by everyone who chooses to invest in MedStar Union Memorial through philanthropy.

To honor these pioneers in medicine, we created The Founders Society – which recognizes donors who have given $1,000 or more.  Membership in The Founders Society is renewed annually and based on the donor's cumulative giving during the calendar year (January 1-December 31).

The J. M. T. Finney, M.D. Legacy Society

The J.M.T. Finney, M.D. Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have included MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in their estate plans through a bequest, charitable gift annuity, trust or other similar arrangement.  We are deeply grateful for these future gifts, which will contribute to the growth and success of the MedStar Union Memorial and its patient care, research and teaching programs.

John M.T. Finney was a skilled surgeon in the early days of the hospital. This Princeton and Harvard educated physician arrived at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in the 1890s to expand his private practice. By 1923, Finney was named the first Chief of Staff.  During his 51-year tenure, Dr. Finney not only shaped the hospital's early physician education programs within the Department of Surgery, but also led the campaign for a new facility in 1919. His dedication to the hospital is inspiring to all who know his story.
