Calvert Street Medical Practice

The need for primary care services was identified in a recent community needs assessment for the MedStar Union Memorial neighborhood. In our own Baltimore region, MedStar Harbor Hospital has had great success in moving low-acuity patients from their Emergency Department (ED) to established Primary Care physician offices located across from its ED. This approach helps to provide quality medical care in the most appropriate setting.

To meet the needs identified in the community assessment, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has opened the Calvert Street Medical Practice across from our ED in the former Radiation Oncology offices on Calvert Street. This site will provide patients, over the age of 18, with access to healthcare services in a timely manner. Patients will be screened in the ED and, if appropriate, referred across the street to the Calvert Street Medical Practice for primary care to treat such needs or conditions as:

  • Abnormal lab results
  • Allergic reactions or rash
  • Asthma
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Bronchitis
  • Cellulitis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Imaging services
  • Knee and Ankle injuries
  • Minor GYN complaints
  • Pre-admission testing
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Suture removal
  • Vaccinations
  • Wound checks

The practice additionally will accept rapid follow up appointments from the ED or the Hospitalist Team to help reduce a patient’s length of stay and the possibility of readmission to the hospital. At this time, the practice is for registered MedStar Health patients only and for patients who may be in need of urgent care from other local MedStar Health offices. Future plans, however, are to be able to take walk-ins for doctor appointments thus providing primary care access for consumers.

The Calvert Street Medical Practice is one way we are supporting our community and providing services that our neighbors need.
