Our multidisciplinary teams work with patients to develop an individualized treatment plan that revolves around their specific needs. Recommended treatments generally depend on the stage of cancer, whether it has spread and a patient’s health. Personal preferences are also an important factor.

 Clinical Trials

MedStar Union Memorial participates in numerous ongoing breast cancer research studies that are open to eligible patients. We are excited to be one of the few sites in the country, and the only site in the region, to participate in vaccine trials for breast cancer.

Plus, as one of four hospitals in the MedStar Health Cancer Network, patients at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of other clinical trials. By participating in a clinical trial, you may benefit from a new treatment not yet available to others.

Genetic Counseling

We understand the impact a cancer diagnosis has on a family—particularly a breast cancer diagnosis. Our genetic counseling program provides comprehensive services to patients and family members concerned about the possibility of developing an “inherited” cancer.

Support Services

At the Breast Center, we provide a wide range of support services to meet the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of patients and their families during and long after treatment. These services are part of the care we provide and are available at no extra cost to our patients. Learn more about our Cancer Support Services.

Our commitment to each patient’s health extends beyond their initial treatment. Many breast cancer survivors find the transition back to everyday medical care difficult after years spent under the care and guidance of cancer specialists. We work with patients through this process and will follow up with them on a regular basis after the completion of treatment to ensure their long-term health.
