Individuals needing orthopaedic services who live or work in Northern Baltimore County and the surrounding areas can now access that care nearby at the region’s newest and most comprehensive, dedicated orthopaedics center—MedStar Health at Timonium. Located at 2118 Greenspring Drive just off Interstate 83 at Timonium Road, the new 46,200-square-foot center brings together orthopaedic, sports medicine, spine, and rehabilitation services in one convenient location.

“Having these services located in the same building means that patients will be able to receive a diagnosis, surgery and rehabilitation all under one roof,” explains Leslie Matthews, MD, medical director of MedStar Orthopaedic Institute. “It also provides more opportunity for providers to collaborate on the best care for each patient.”

Providing that care are some of the area’s top orthopaedic, sports medicine and spine specialists from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, and MedStar Harbor Hospital, many of whom also treat the area’s most elite athletes.

Liz McAbee, CRNP, a nurse practitioner at the new center, speaks from experience when she talks about the benefits it offers to patients. “When you have an orthopaedic problem, whether it’s a sports injury or a condition caused by something else, having to travel all over the place to get the care you need can be challenging,” she notes.

When McAbee, a former star lacrosse player at Loyola University, tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a game her senior year of high school, her family turned to the specialists at MedStar Orthopaedic Institute to care for her. After surgery to reconstruct her ACL was performed by Richard Levine, MD, a sports medicine surgeon, she went off to college but struggled to play the sport she loved because of calf and foot pain.

She was referred to another MedStar Orthopaedic Institute specialist, Gregory Guyton, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon, who helped her get back to where she needed to be in order to play at her peak. Rehabilitation was key to her progress during this entire time. “The care I received was outstanding, but it would have been a lot easier if all of my providers had been in the same location,” she says. That’s exactly what you’ll find at MedStar Health at Timonium. “From prehab to rehab and from nonsurgical to surgical treatments, we’ve got every expert in place to treat individuals with orthopaedic needs,” Dr. Matthews adds.

The new center, previously an office building, was completely gutted and retrofitted to offer a wide range of specialized medical services. Among the features of the facility are:

  • 26 exam rooms for orthopaedics and sports medicine
  • Advanced medical imaging capabilities, including a 3T MRI, the most powerful diagnostic tool available
  • A surgery center with two operating rooms, pre-op and post-op areas, and one procedure room
  • A state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation gym and treatment area

In addition, the new center serves as MedStar Sports Medicine’s premier location for treating the area’s professional athletes. It is home to the team physicians for the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Blast and Maryland Jockey Club, as well as numerous area college and high school teams.

“This entire project is a great example of MedStar’s ongoing commitment to making the highest quality health care accessible in the community,” Dr. Matthews adds. “The breadth and depth of our orthopaedic and sports medicine expertise is unparalleled and we have fellowship-trained surgeons in every orthopaedic subspecialty.”

McAbee, whose experience with MedStar Orthopaedic Institute inspired her to pursue a career in the field as a nurse practitioner, is thrilled to be part of the new center where she works with Dr. Guyton. “This is truly a one-stop shop. It’s patient-friendly, physician-friendly and the accommodations for patients are outstanding.”

“Having orthopaedic offices spread across the county was often confusing to patients who didn’t know which location to go to,” Dr. Matthews notes. “Co-locating our specialists enables them to consult with each other more easily, which is extremely beneficial to patients.
