MedStar Union Memorial offers a full array of diagnostic, medical, surgical and rehabilitative services. Specially trained in the needs of critical care patients, our highly skilled physicians, nurses and staff use sophisticated equipment to monitor and assess patients' cardiac, respiratory and other vital functions.
There are several locations within the hospital for providing critical care nursing and medical management for patients requiring constant observation and complex management. Unless otherwise noted, all of the following units are open 24 hours a day.
Advanced Inpatient Heart Failure Treatment Center
This unit provides comprehensive care for heart failure patients.
Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Vascular Institute
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Vascular Institute consist of six suites with the latest generation in digital technology, operated by interventional cardiologists, vascular specialists, registered nurses and radiology technologists. The labs accommodate inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures. The labs are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with staff on-call 24 hours per day.
Cardiovascular Recovery Unit
This recovery unit is staffed by registered nurses who prepare patients for cardiac cath lab and vascular procedures and oversee the recovery of all outpatients until discharge from the unit. Patients requiring overnight stays are transferred to the Post-Cardiac Interventional Unit. The CVRU is open Monday morning 6:30 a.m. through Saturday 3:30 p.m.
Cardiac and Vascular Diagnostic Laboratories
Procedures performed in this area include cardiac imaging, vascular services and non-invasive cardiology procedures. The unit is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with on-call service.
Cardiac Evaluation Unit
This unit provides an environment where patients requiring cardiac monitoring and other specialized treatments are cared for by a team of skilled nurses. Patients are usually admitted to this unit directly from the Critical Care Unit after their condition stabilizes.
Cardiovascular Operating Room
Staffed by open-heart surgeons, anesthesiologists and cardiac care nurses, the Cardiovascular Operating Room is used for patients undergoing complex coronary artery bypass surgery and valve repair or replacement. The staff is on-call 24 hours a day.
Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
The staff of this unit manages the care of patients who are in the initial recovery stages following open-heart surgery. Patients are closely monitored and typically remain on the unit for 18 to 24 hours. They are then transferred to the Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit.
Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit
Patients in this unit are monitored by a team of health care professionals who assist in speeding the recovery process. The unit is used for patients who are recovering from open-heart surgery, valve repair or general vascular procedures.
Critical Care Unit
The specially trained critical care staff works in a technically superior, people-friendly environment, designed to monitor and assess patients' cardiac, respiratory and other functions. The 28,605 square feet unit consists of 24 spacious private rooms connected by today's most sophisticated information technology, allowing nurses to access and update patient records directly from the bedside, and primary care physicians to track their patients' progress while the patients are receiving critical care treatment.
Our exercise physiologists work with patients to offer rehabilitation following surgical and medical procedures. They meet daily with patients to provide assessments, develop exercise prescriptions in conjunction with the attending physician, and offer educational materials to prepare patients for discharge.
Geriatric Care Unit
This unit provides specialized medical and post-surgical care to senior adults, stroke and vascular patients. Care is delivered in a multi-disciplinary approach through a team that includes physicians, nursing staff, case managers and social workers, dieticians, occupational and physical therapists, wound care specialists, pharmacists and pastoral care.
This Medical/Surgical unit provides care to patients recovering from many kinds of surgical procedures. The nursing staff is specially trained to meet the needs of patients with asthma and other respiratory conditions, diabetes, hypertension and kidney failure.
This Oncology/Medical-Surgical Unit serves medical, surgical, gynecological and cancer patients. It specializes in chemotherapy administration, postoperative care, pain management, treatment of oncologic complications and palliative care.
This orthopaedic unit is dedicated to patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. It consists of private patient rooms, a therapy gym and special services tailored to joint replacement patients.
