“Dr. Jacobs is truly an outstanding surgeon! I had my left total hip replacement done in 2017, very successful…and then my right total hip replacement this past Jan. 8, 2019. And now I am walking with no more pain and no restrictions whatsoever. … It is so exciting to walk freely again…no more walker, no more cane, no more pain!!! He tells you everything honestly immediately, shows you the x-rays, explains the process. I was especially nervous on my first hip surgery…Dr. Jacobs took special care with me because of this. …I cannot recommend him any more highly. Don’t hesitate to select him.” – verified patient
Michael A. Jacobs, MD, is a top-ranked, nationally recognized leader in hip and knee replacement surgery, with more than 35 years’ experience in orthopedic surgery, teaching and prosthetic development.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Jacobs has been Head Orthopedic Surgeon for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. He is a member of several prestigious professional societies including the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and American Orthopedic Association. Dr. Jacobs is a board-certified surgeon who graduated from the Harvard orthopedic program and has been part of the orthopedic staff at Johns Hopkins since 1985.
His areas of specialty are robotic total and partial knee replacement surgery, traditional partial and total knee replacement surgery, arthroscopic knee surgery, hip replacement surgery, minimally invasive hip replacement surgery from the anterior approach, hip resurfacing, and revision knee and hip surgery. He has performed over 7,000 joint replacement procedures. As a leader in his field, Dr. Jacobs was among the first in Maryland to perform robotic total knee replacement surgery with the Mako robot. He operates at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
It is essential that patients with hip or knee pain partner with a physician with expert knowledge of the most advanced techniques, so they can advise the patient on the proper path.
Dr. Jacobs is a pioneer in, and a leading proponent of, minimally invasive anterior approach total hip replacement using the hana® table, specifically designed for this advanced procedure. In the anterior hip replacement surgery, none of the hip muscles are detached or damaged as in traditional total joint replacement surgery. As a result, patients experience a minimum amount of post-operative pain. Muscle recovery is truly remarkable, demonstrated by the patient videos below. He has performed hundreds of cases using this technique and trained other orthopaedic surgeons throughout the country on its use.
While many hip replacement patients are candidates for the anterior technique, some are better served by other surgical approaches. It is essential to assess each patient uniquely so that they can be advised of the best option for the optimal result.
Dr. Jacobs is also a leader in robotic knee surgery for both partial and total knee replacements. For many patients, Makoplasty allows for more precise sizing, alignment and ligament balance in a total knee. It is also the best technique for partial or unicondylar knee replacements. This technique is far superior to other so-called patient specific systems. Dr. Jacobs has done hundreds of cases with the Mako system.
Dr. Jacobs is also a pioneer in hip resurfacing, which is designed for younger active patients. Although it is indicated infrequently, there are still a small number of patients who may be candidates if they fully understand the risks and benefits. There are few orthopedists in the country who are better positioned to advise potential patients about this concept.
As the Orioles' team physician, Dr. Jacobs has a unique understanding of younger hip and knee patients and how best to approach their problems. He is also an expert in knee arthroscopy, performing all forms of arthroscopic surgery on the knees of patients of all ages.
