BALTIMORE—(May 13, 2016)—MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has been named a 2016 Maryland Employer of the Year by The Arc Maryland. As a committed partner to The Arc, the award demonstrates MedStar Union Memorial’s dedicated support to fulfilling The Arc’s mission: to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.

The prestigious Employer of the Year award is presented each year to organizations that have contributed to the dignity of persons with developmental disabilities and whose actions have significantly improved the quality of life of an individual(s), positive systematic change, or protected basic human, civil or legal rights. MedStar Union Memorial is one of two organizations in the state of Maryland to receive the award in 2016.

“There truly is a moral responsibility among us to include these young individuals who want to work, in our workforce,” said Bradley S. Chambers, president of MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospitals. “But what we didn’t anticipate, is the level of dedication, productivity, and commitment that we would get in return. With their employment comes inspiration. We are honored to be recognized, but the appreciation is ours.”

MedStar Union Memorial began their partnership with The Arc in 2012 with the launch of Project SEARCH. In alliance with The Arc Baltimore, Project SEARCH provides a unique model of skill building and employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program places students in internships throughout the hospital. It also includes a classroom component, through which interns receive instruction in employability and independent living skills. Since its inception, the program has served 35 students, 10 of whom MedStar Union Memorial has hired post internship.

The award will be presented to MedStar Union Memorial at The Arc Maryland’s Annual Convention Luncheon on Friday, May 13, 2016 at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve in Hanover from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
