Baltimore—(February 8, 2016)—MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute has named George Ruiz, MD, as chief of Cardiology for MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospitals. He succeeds Dr. Jeffrey Quartner who has served these institutions admirably over the past 10 years.  Dr. Ruiz brings specialized clinical expertise, combined with strong business skills, to both enhance MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute’s footprint in the region and bring increased cardiovascular care to patients in the Baltimore community.

Board certified in advanced heart failure and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Ruiz specializes in adult cardiology, pulmonary hypertension, adult congenital heart disease, right heart failure, advanced mechanical support, and congestive heart failure.

In this role, Dr. Ruiz will be responsible for all cardiac services delivered at MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Good Samaritan, working collaboratively with both administrative and medical leadership to ensure a consistently high level of quality care and patient service as both hospitals continue to connect with MedStar Heart &Vascular Institute and the Cleveland Clinic Alliance.

“Dr. Ruiz brings enormous intelligence, talent and enthusiasm to the task at hand,” said Stuart F. Seides, MD, physician executive director, MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute. “I am confident of his abilities to play an important role as we continue to develop MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute across the system as the region’s premier destination for cardiovascular care.”

Joining MedStar Health in 2005 as an attending physician, Dr. Ruiz worked with the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, becoming a founding member of the Special Moms Special Babies program, the first regional service to care for pregnant women with heart disease. In the subsequent years, he served various roles at the Hospital Center, including director of Advanced Cardiac Support Clinic; physician champion of the Heart Failure Core Measure Group; director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit; and most recently, associate director of the Advanced Heart Failure Section.

Throughout his tenure with MedStar, Dr. Ruiz has been an active clinician and a tireless promoter of numerous initiatives around quality, safety, patient satisfaction, reducing length of stay and preventing readmissions.

A graduate of Brown University, Dr. Ruiz received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He did his postgraduate training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where he was chief medical resident, a fellow in cardiology, and one of the first to be jointly trained at Boston Children’s Hospital in the emerging subspecialty of adult congenital heart disease.

In addition, Dr. Ruiz recently received his MBA from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. He also has high-level government and consulting experience, serving two years as a White House fellow during which time he worked on health-related matters as a special assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Ruiz mentors thousands of medical students and speaks nationally about success strategies for medical school and residency. He helps empower the Latino community by appearing regularly on Spanish-language television broadcasts to discuss cardiovascular health. His work with adult congenital heart patients was featured in the Associated Press and on CNN.
