Receives Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association
MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Award, a national recognition endorsing the hospital’s continued commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for stroke patients.
Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. As a recipient of the AHA/ASA’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Award, MedStar Union Memorial demonstrates continuing efforts to improving the lives of stroke patients by advancing care and outcomes.
“This achievement brings national recognition for the care we provide each and every day within the walls of our hospital,” said Karen Owings, RN-BC, director of Patient Care Services at MedStar Union Memorial. “We are proud of our entire stroke team who each made this honor possible with their endless dedication to improving care and outcomes for our stroke patients and their families.”
To receive the award, MedStar Union Memorial achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Performance Achievement indicators for 24 consecutive months. MedStar Union Memorial also achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with at least six of the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.
These measures include aggressive risk-reduction therapies, including the use of medications, along with cholesterol-reducing drugs and smoking cessation counseling. The quick and efficient use of guideline measures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives.
Get With The Guidelines is the AHA/ASA’s collaborative performance improvement program, demonstrated to improve adherence to evidence-based care of patients hospitalized with stroke. The Get With The Guidelines team follows a strict set of criteria in creating achievement and quality measures. Quality measures apply to processes and aspects of care that are strongly supported by science.
The program provides hospitals with a Web-based Patient Management Tool™, decision support, a robust registry, real-time benchmarking capabilities, and other performance improvement methodologies toward the goal of enhancing patient outcomes and saving lives.
