Baltimore—For the seventh consecutive year, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital ranks among the nation’s top 50 “Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital was named on the coveted annual list, ranking nationally in orthopaedics.

Of the 5,000 hospitals surveyed, MedStar Union Memorial is one of only 147 hospitals to be nationally ranked in one or more specialties.

Ranked fourth in both Maryland and the Baltimore metro area, MedStar Union Memorial also received high-performing scores in nine specialty areas: cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, and urology.

“Our continued national recognition from U.S. News is a testament to the quality care we provide each day at MedStar Union Memorial,” said MedStar Union Memorial President, Bradley Chambers. “I am proud to be a part of a team of dedicated doctors, nurses and associates, each with a steadfast commitment to ensure every patient that comes through our doors is treated with the highest level of excellence in care.”

This year's “Best Hospitals,” the 24th annual edition, showcases nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and spans 16 medical specialties, from cancer to neurology & neurosurgery. U.S. News created the “Best Hospitals” ranking system to identify the best medical centers for the most difficult patients—those whose illnesses pose unusual challenges because of underlying conditions, procedure difficulty, or other medical issues that add risk.

Factors used by U.S. News for the rankings included technology, hospital’s reputation among physicians, patient satisfaction and quality measures such as survival rates and nurse to patient ratio.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. Just 3 percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.”

MedStar Union Memorial shares the top list with several MedStar Health sister hospitals. A total of eight MedStar facilities were ranked as top regional hospitals, including MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital in the Baltimore region; and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar National Rehab Network and MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the Washington, D.C., region. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital was ranked in both Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region.
